Learning to Forgive Yourself
Have you ever made a stupid mistake? Well, you better believe that I have. As a matter of fact I've made more than I like to remember. When I've done something dumb, stupid and regrettable I feel like kicking myself. I always ask myself, "Why did I do that?" I put myself down. I replay the incident over and over again in my mind, and I ask myself over and over again, "Why did you do that?"
Well, what should you do when you've blown it?
First, remember that you are human and that a part of being human is that you are imperfect. No person has ever lived their lives without making any kind of mistakes or wrong decisions. The Bible describes the lives of individuals whom we admire such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, David and Peter. What is included in their stories are their shortcomings, faults and imperfections. Noah drank too much wine. Abraham was a deceiver. Moses had a bad temper and was a murderer. David was an adulterer and a murderer. Peter denied our Lord three times and was hypocritical in his dealings with the Gentiles.
Second, remember that your wrong decisions provide an opportunity for personal growth. Each time I have made a bad decision I have learned from it. It has helped me to become a better person. It also helps me to identify with, sympathize with and minister to others who have made the same bad decisions.
Finally, remember that God has forgiven you. God's forgiveness is free, abundant and without any strings.
It is based on his grace toward us and is just because of Jesus' finished work on the cross which paid for my wrongdoing. David wrote these words recorded in Psalm 32:5, "then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said I will confess my transgressions to the Lord - and you forgave the guilt of my sin." Therefore, since God has forgiven me, I can simply claim for myself what he has already done.
